Our DNA determines the number of hair follicles that we are born with, therefore it is impossible to increase the number of follicles on the scalp. Hair growth is regulated by the dermal papillae, a structure located at the base of the hair follicle. The dermal papilla regulates which phase of the growth cycle a follicle is in at any one time. During the growth phase, rapid cell division takes place above the dermal papilla, at the matrix. The dividing cells are pushed upwards from the follicle's base, where they harden and undergo pigmentation, a process known as keratinisation. Keratinised cells form the hair shaft then exit the epidermis, appearing to the naked eye as hair.

Androgenetic Alopecia, or male and female pattern baldness, is the main type of hair loss to affect the adult population. The primary cause of this is the hormone testosterone, which when converted into the more powerful DHT, then attacks the dermal papilae leading to reduced cell division and consequently thinner hair. This eventually leads to baldness. Treated early enough, when the follicles are alive but potentially invisible to the human eye, the laser treatment can reverse this loss and give the patient back some or most of their hair.

Although there are a number of dermatologic conditions that cause hair loss, they produce a pattern that is different from the diffuse forms of hair loss mentioned above.

Alopecia Areata is a genetic, auto-immune disease that typifies non-scarring hair loss. It manifests with the sudden onset of discrete round patches of hair loss (although the condition can become generalized). Alopecia areata affects small patches of the scalp but may also occur as alopecia totalis, which involves the entire scalp and eyebrows, or as alopecia universalis, which involves the entire body. The laser is suitable for use on this condition once initial regrowth appears. Patients will notice far quicker, thicker growth with treatment, leading to a return to full hair far sooner.

Chemotherapy causes a temporary form of hair loss called telogen effluvium, a condition where hair is shifted from its growth phase into a resting stage and then, after several months, is shed. Fortunately, this shedding is reversible when the medication is stopped. The Halo treatment can be started two weeks after treatment has finished; patients will benefit from a return to a full head of hair, rather than the 'candy floss' hair that most patients will endure.
