Men ---- Don’t die of ignorance or embarrassment
BE AWARE THAT:
- Prostate cancer affects only men
- Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer
- In the UK, every year 10,000 men (1 every hour) die of the disease and there are 35,000 new cases diagnosed
- If there is a family history of prostate cancer ie if you have a grandfather, father or brother who has had the disease, you are more than twice as likely to develop the cancer
- If caught and treated early, prostate cancer is often curable.
BE AWARE OF SYMPTONS:
- Difficulty passing water, slow to start and stop
- Passing water often, particularly getting up in the night
- Feeling your bladder has not emptied after a visit to the toilet
- Pain in the testicles or groins or lower back
BE AWARE If you have one or more of the symptoms, see your Doctor immediately and ask for a PSA test. DON’T DELAY
BE AWARE If you have symptoms you won’t necessarily have prostate cancer. There are many other non- cancerous conditions giving rise to these symptoms which are easily treated.
BE AWARE Sometimes there are no symptoms with prostate cancer, so if you are worried and concerned for any reason and if there is a family history of the cancer and you are over 40, DON’T DELAY ask for a PSA test.
