The Helsby Arms - Review Print E-mail

The Helsby Arms collection serviceArriving in style!

We always enjoy visiting the Helsby Arms, where you are guaranteed a warm welcome, great service and fantastic food.

So we were thrilled when Steve and Carole invited us back to review their new menu and take advantage of the free collection and drop off service they now offer.

Having purchased a luxury, air conditioned people carrier, that can seat 6 passengers, Steve and Carole are delighted to offer a free pick up and drop off service for local customers who book to dine. It really was lovely to take advantage of this service and it added to the whole evening. So next time you are dining out, why not give it a try but remember to book early!

The Meal

The menu at The Helsby Arms changes frequently, and with a specials board also on offer, I always find that I am spoilt for choice!

Carole likes to keep her chefs on their toes by setting challenges and special events that allow them to show off their culinary skills. We visited during National Vegetarian week and I was very tempted to opt for the special vegetarian ‘taster’ menu which offered no less than an unbelievable eight courses!

With 4 cask beers on offer, Chris enjoyed a pint of Black Sheep as we made our food choice, whilst I enjoyed a glass of the Pinot Grigio Blush.

Outside dining in style at the Helsby Arms

Decisions finally made, the beautifully presented starters arrived. Trio of melon, served with summer fruits and strawberry sauce. Breaded Brie wedges with cranberry sauce garnished with salad drizzled with a wholegrain mustard dressing and for Chris, Chilli beef, vermicelli noodles and rocket salad accompanied by a mint yoghurt dip, which was perfect to take the tang off the tongue!

Charlie and Will chose from the ‘Young Persons Menu’, which offered a good choice. The Chicken Nuggets and Brown Cow Burger are both made on the premises, using only the finest quality Aberdeen Angus steak mince and free range chicken. They both agreed that they were very succulent, thick pieces of meat that were very tasty!

Portions are very much geared to the individual child and were certainly plentiful enough for our hungry 9 and 11 year olds!

The Pan Fried Salmon Fillet in a prawn, white wine and dill sauce that I chose was very enjoyable. The sauce was light and creamy and not too rich.

Accompanied by perfectly cooked new potatoes, Chanteney carrots, baby corn and sugar snaps it proved to be a good choice! As was the Chunks of Williams of Flint Beef Steak, slowly braised in real ale with a puff pastry lid, which Chris thoroughly enjoyed accompanied by homemade chips, a huge plateful for £8.90! Superb food which doesn’t cost the earth.

The boys had their hearts set on the Chocolate Brownie with real Cheshire Farm ice cream from the moment they saw the menu and were by no means disappointed when it arrived. We were struggling by this point, but I did persuade Chris to share one of the delicious homemade Crème Brulee with me. As anyone that has tried this Helsby Arms speciality will agree that no matter how full you are, you just have to find room!

Carole and Steve are exceptionally good at what they do and constantly create new and exciting ideas for their clientele to enjoy.

Party Packages

They love hosting parties and have come up with a way of making special occasions extra memorable - by offering a selection of special Celebration Packages. For example, ‘One for the girls’ sounds great, starting with cocktails on arrival, before being shown to your table, decorated with balloons and flowers to enjoy a menu of delights.

To finish why not opt for a Baileys latte from the coffee menu while you dip into your goodie bag. With free local pick up and drop off, it gets even better. Any celebration package can be tailored to your occasion, speak to Carole or check the website for more information.

On top of all this, coming soon is the Helsby Arms loyalty card, with great offers for regular diners.

Farthers Day Lunch

And finally if your Dad’s one in a million, why not spoil him with a relaxing pub lunch on Sunday 15th June. Take my advice and book early, Fathers Day is notoriously busy!

Enjoy, we certainly did!
