Two for One on all main courses at The Plum Tree. There’s nothing nicer than downing tools on a Sunday and popping out for tea. That’s just what we did a couple of weeks ago when Chris, myself and the boys visited The Plum Tree in Dunham Hill. Recently refurbished, The Plum Tree offers great value dining with their ‘Two for One’ offer on all main meals including a large selection available on the Specials Board. Formerly The Dunham Arms, this local pub is now part of The Marston's Group which are intent on putting the ‘Pub’ back where it belongs, right at the forefront of the community. Marston’s PLC certainly appear to be thriving despite the current climate, opening new pubs where others are closing so they must be doing something right! The refurbishment at The Plum Tree includes a spacious conservatory to the rear with a cosy log burning stove and views of the Welsh Hills in the distance. Inside there are light and comfortable dining areas and on a nice day you can take advantage of the seating in the garden to eat ‘al fresco’.
The menu is vast - Salads, Burgers, Pasta, Fish, Sunday Roasts, Grills, in fact everything from Sausage & Mash to Chicken Tikka Masala! Including snacks and a very extensive and well priced children's menu, suitable for tiny tots to older children. We often enjoy picking at a variety of dishes to start with so this time we opted for Cheesy Nachos served with salsa and a sour cream and chive dip and one of the Combos to share. Smoky chicken wings, garlic bread, potato wedges, breaded mushrooms and onion rings, with garlic mayonnaise and BBQ dips. There’s something to please everyone without getting too full! On to the Main Course…Tender BBQ Ribs and Chicken and a very juicy grilled 10oz gammon steak, both accompanied with chips and a side salad were Charlie and Will’s choice from the main menu whilst Chris and I decided on dishes from the Specials Board. ‘Posh Surf and Turf’ was well priced at £13.95 and consisted of a 10oz Rump Steak topped with King Prawns, chips and side salad and after much deliberation I finally decided on one of the two Sea Bass dishes on offer. Two fillets of beautiful plump sea bass with a Cajun topped sauce, accompanied with new potatoes and seasonal vegetables, the fish was delicious and considering the two for one offer, our main courses were very good value! For dessert; again, there is an extensive choice available with hot and cold puddings as well as 5 Ice Cream Sundaes to choose from. We left the decision to our chocoholic boys and not surprisingly their decision was speedy! Melt in the Middle Chocolate Pudding described as ‘a rich chocolate pudding with a melting heart’ with the choice of either custard, cream or ice cream was certainly a hit judging by the empty plate before I’d managed to snaffle a mouthful! A generous portion of profiteroles with chocolate sauce and whipped cream was equally good. To accompany our meal I enjoyed one of the organic, fair-trade wines on offer, Running Duck Shiraz Rosé, aptly named after the Indian “Runner” Ducks that roam the vineyards eating the bugs that harm the vines! And very good it was too! Marston’s Beer Company brew some of the UK’s leading ale brands and operate five breweries across England, so Chris enjoyed one of the excellent cask beers on offer. |
