Devonshire Bakery Ltd was started at the turn of the last century, in Porter Street, Runcorn, by Fred Crowther, Great Grandfather of the present Managing Director, Rob. Then it was known as The Devonshire Cafe and eventually combined a shop, cafe, bakery and ballroom, the latter being the renowned local venue for ‘the Dev’ dances and wedding receptions. Over the last 80 plus years the business has grown and changed dramatically and now boasts shops in Weaverham, Runcorn and the Head Office in Frodsham.
Rob’s niece, Rebecca joined the business three years ago and obviously has the family flair, passion and patience to produce these wonderful works of art along with Dawn and Carolyn. Rebecca has also been assigned the task of updating the website for Crowther’s cake studio, which will be available to view very shortly.
Whether you are looking for a Birthday (all ages), Baby Shower, Christening, Anniversary or Wedding cake there is a permanent display in the cake studio where you can browse at leisure and even sample the delicious cakes with a cuppa!
Cakes can be made from a variety of sponges and fillings: vanilla with jam and butter cream, chocolate fudge, carrot, ginger, chocolate, lemon drizzle, battenburg and of course fruit.
In the name of research I forced myself to sample several of these options and my favourite was a toss up between the fantastic carrot cake and the very moorish chocolate fudge, yummy!
In addition to the extensive range of cakes on display there are many photographs of cakes to inspire you, or, if you have your own idea then cakes can be made to your own specification. Another popular option is to have a photograph printed on top of a cake using edible ink. Photographs can either be emailed or scanned from a hard copy. Cup cakes, beautifully displayed in a stand are also very much in vogue.
Although the girls can create cakes at the drop of a hat, their preference is 1 week between ordering and collection or delivery and obviously a lot longer for Wedding cakes. Prices range from £13.75 upwards, so they may not be as expensive as you might think!
You are welcome to take along samples of fabric or colours that will feature in your Wedding day and icing colours can be mixed to suit and specific ribbon can be ordered to match. If you are a traditionalist then you can save the top tier of the cake and have it converted to a Christening cake later! Wedding favours made up of shortbread, hand made chocolate truffles or gingerbread shapes are also available.
The Cake Studio also stocks a large selection of cake accessories for those who enjoy decorating their own cake. Everything from candles and sugar paste to little characters. Call in to see!
