As the weather turns cooler Blakemere Village is preparing to warm those chilly days with autumn fun for the whole family.
Blakemere’s annual Scarecrow Trail from Saturday October 19, to Thursday October 31, this year will be bigger and better than ever with dozens of colourful characters to spot and fantastic prizes to be won. Scarecrows will be created by the many shops and attractions at Blakemere and visitors are invited to come along and discover each one.
This year sees the shop celebrating the future of Les Harris Jewellers as daughter Niki and Son in law Andrew are taking over running the family Jewellers. After 44 years in Frodsham, Les and Carolyn are looking to retire, however they will still be on hand with their lifetime of experience but will leave the day to day running of the shop to Niki and Andy.
Hello… I would like to take a moment of your time to introduce myself…
My name is Julie and I live in Frodsham with my three sons. And with almost 18 years in the Travel Industry, I am now one of the latest experienced travel advisors to join the UK’s leading Independent travel company, Travel Counsellors.
When a company has few employees who are all multi-tasking and already working very hard to build the business, marketing can be seen as a secondary activity that someone may do once a month if they have time. This is why small businesses need to prioritise marketing.
A Sensitive Restoration And Conversion
The History Of The Building
The Bourne located on Main Street in Frodsham came to life as Bourne Methodist Chapel and Schoolhouse when it was officially opened on Thursday, 11th July 1878. It is named after Hugh Bourne (1772-1852), one of the founders of Primitive Methodism. It was constructed at a cost of £700 and proved a quality addition equal to the historic structures of Main Street. The schoolhouse to the rear predates the chapel and was built between 1874 and 1876. The Chapel and linked Schoolhouse continued in use for over a Century until the final service was held in Easter 1987, soon after which the buildings were converted for office use.
The Bourne now begins a new chapter in it’s life with the quality of the building once again being paramount as the Chapel and Schoolhouse are sensitively renovated to form four new distinctive townhouses.
Ruth Greenleaves has been in the beauty and holistics business for 15 years. Seven years working in a salon, including 3 as manageress and for the last 7 years she has worked as a mobile beauty and holistic therapist. Ruth has built up an impressive client base during this time and wanted to offer clients something more. In a persons home there are often many distractions - telephones ringing, a knock at the door, children or pets creating havoc in the background! Ruth hit on the idea of a summer house in her garden, where clients can step away from the stress and strain of life and have a dedicated time just for themselves. After a lot of thought and effort The Holistic Hut was ready for business and opened it’s doors last month. The Hut is well insulated and heated so even in winter it will be a cosy retreat.
May 2005 - August 2013
May 2005 and the first edition of Helsby to Hand hit the streets. To say that I was a little bit apprehensive is an understatement! What right did I have bringing out a little village magazine and writing an intro to everyone? I was scared stiff that people would mock!
The idea of Helsby to Hand started when Charlie and Will were at Alvanley Primary School and often at the school gate another parent would ask “does anyone know a good electrician / decorator” etc and friends would say “ask Sarah, she knows everyone”! Someone joked “you should write everyone down in a list for us all” What? Like a little directory? - that stayed in my mind.

The Ovencleaners celebrate 10 successful years in business...
Lorraine started her oven cleaning business on the 18th June, 2003 after moving ‘up North’ following redundancy and through hard work and attention to detail she now has an enviable client database of 670 regular customers!
Starting a business as a single mum with two sons to support was a tough ask but Lorraine rose to the challenge, leafleting and promoting her business, picking up work along the way. Although the first 6 months were a hard slog, Lorraine says that it was definitely worth the effort and plans to be the oldest oven cleaner in town! She’s very passionate about her business and I personally can vouch that she does an amazing job and I look forward to her annual visit, bringing my oven back to showroom condition every Christmas!
